James Duckworth defeated former Boys’ Wimbledon runner-up Liam Broady this week in three sets, 6-2 4-6 6-2, to end his three-match losing streak in Newport and win his first match of the tournament at the fourth attempt. For the Australian, who suffered an injury earlier in the year, hadn’t won a main-draw match in a tour-level event in 2022 prior to this week, and even struggled to play his best tennis in the Porto Challenger last week, winning a three-setter at this level was a much-needed confidence-boosting result. His most recent performance at this level in a quarterfinal occurred at the Paris Masters in the final months of the 2021 season. The former world #46 has never before played in an ATP event on grass.

In Newport’s first round, Quentin Halys defeated Alexei Popyrin in two tough sets to snap a three-match losing record against Australian opponents. He will now play another Aussie player in the second round. The Frenchman, who boasts a huge serve, has been one of the Challenger circuit’s most reliable players in recent years, but he has yet to advance past the second round on the main tour. He has lost all nine of his second-round matches at this level, with the first one being in a 6-7 6-7 loss in a straight set against none other than James Duckworth in Nice back in 2015.
