On Monday, January 23, Donna Vekic and Linda Fruhvirtova will compete in uncharted territory as they compete for a place in their first-ever Australian Open quarterfinals. Vekic, the more seasoned of the two players, entered the competition after regaining her form toward the end of the previous year. The Croat advanced to one of her career’s most significant finals in San Diego in October but fell short to World No. 1 Iga Swiatek. Fruhvirtova, meanwhile, recently completed a transformative year that saw her win her first WTA championship in Chennai and break into the top 100 of the rankings. The Czech teen has won over competitors like Victoria Azarenka and Elise Mertens, among others, and has impressed many with her ability to outperform much more seasoned competitors. She defeated a few local favourites in Melbourne as well as her own Marketa Vondrousova on the way to winning her first Grand Slam in the second week.
