Stefanos Tsitsipas will take on Frances Tiafoe on Sunday, September 25 in the third singles match of the 2022 Laver Cup.
Diego Schwartzman suffered his third straight singles loss at the Laver Cup when Stefanos Tsitsipas completely overwhelmed him, winning 6-2, 6-1. He had previously triumphed in straight-set matches against Aziz Dougaz and Skander Mansouri in Greece’s 3-1 Davis Cup victory over Tunisia, making this his third consecutive victory in team tournaments. Despite having a perfect 3-0 record in singles matches at the Laver Cup, the top-ranked Greek will be making his first three-pointer of the competition. In his first outing in 2019 against Taylor Fritz, he triumphed, and in his second outing in 2021 against Nick Kyrgios. The doubles match between Matteo Berrettini and Andy Murray and the singles match between Novak Djokovic would be enough for the reigning champions to win, so they might not need the Greek’s help on Day 3 after all.
Frances Tiafoe faced a significant test in his first-ever encounter in the event. He had plenty of form, confidence, and momentum going into London. Although he blasted 17 winners and performed pretty well after a sluggish start, he was only able to win four games against former world number one Novak Djokovic, 1-6 3-6. Currently 1-6 in singles matches in team events, world #19 (career high). He suffered defeats at the hands of Marin Cilic and Borna Coric in the Davis Cup in 2018 and lost all three of his singles matches at the Hopman Cup the following year until overcoming the underdog Nicolas Mejia in three sets in the Davis Cup the previous year to put an end to this troubling streak.
