Ajla Tomljanovic and Fernanda Contreras Gomez are scheduled to face each other in the first round of the 2022 WTA Guadalajara Open on October 18.
Ajla Tomljanovic, who just caused significant damage in the US, would not mind finishing her season there. In order to advance to the quarterfinals in Cincinnati and Flushing Meadows, she defeated Serena Williams as well as Paula Badosa and Veronika Kudermetova. The already three-time major quarterfinalist, who was below the top 70 in August, then broke through to a new career-best position. She is about to play in Mexico for the first time in more than four years; in Monterrey in 2018 and Acapulco in 2014, she reached the quarterfinals there.
There is no better place for Fernanda Contreras Gomez to make her debut on the WTA 1000 than at home. After reaching a number of milestones this year—including defeating Sofia Kenin in Tokyo and Panna Udvardy in Paris—she has been given a main draw wildcard. After graduating from Vanderbilt, the 25-year-old started her professional career in 2019, and she has already established herself among the top 150. She has suffered resounding straight-set defeats in her three encounters with top-50 opponents, most recently losing to Veronika Kudermetova in Tokyo by scores of 6-0, 6-1.
