Frances Tiafoe will play qualifier Taro Daniel in the second round of the 2022 Atlanta Open after receiving a first-round bye.
Tiafoe finished the grass season with his first-ever Wimbledon fourth-round appearance, where he fell to David Goffin in a challenging five-set match. His finest performance this year was on clay, where he placed second at the Estoril Open. The American was making progress with each tournament he played in throughout his early hardcourt season. Tiafoe advanced to the second round of the Australian Open despite suffering back-to-back first-round defeats in warm-up competitions. He advanced to the third round of the Indian Wells Open before falling to Andrey Rublev. At the Miami Open, he went one step further, making it to the fourth round before losing in three sets to Francisco Cerundolo. In his previous four outings, Tiafoe only managed to win one main draw match in Atlanta. He will be trying to make a deep run this time around based on his current form.
Taro At the Atlanta Open, Daniel had to first make it through the qualifying rounds. He won over Adrian Mannarino and Ricardas Berankis to earn a spot in the main draw. Daniel lost his serve three times while playing Sebastian Korda in the first round, giving up the first set very meekly. In the second set, he played well and jumped out to a fast 3-0 lead. Although Korda was able to break serve, the Japanese went on to win the next three games in a row to take the set. For the most of the decisive set, the two players were evenly matched. In the eighth game of the set, Daniel earned the crucial break to increase his lead to 5-3. He then won the game with ease, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Frances Tiafoe and Taro Daniel will take on each other on Wednesday July 27 in the second round of the 2022 Atlanta open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 25 and conclude on July 31 this year.
