The Atlanta Open's second round will feature Australian John Millman versus home favourite Brandon Nakashima.
Nakashima faced Jordan Thompson in the first round following his first-ever appearance in the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon. For the majority of the set, neither player came close to a breakpoint. The American got a set point at 6-5 with his opponent serving to stay in the set, but he couldn’t capitalize on it. The first set then entered a tie-break. Despite Thompson gaining an early 5-2 advantage, the 20-year-old claimed the next five points to seal the set. The second set was quickly underway with Thompson leading 3-0. This time, he prevented his opponent from making a comeback and quickly won the set. In the sixth game of the third set, Nakashima gained the crucial break to go 4-2 up, thereby putting an end to the contest. He won 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-3 in the end.
John Millman was originally scheduled to participate in the Atlanta Open qualifying rounds, but a few withdrawals allowed him to gain a straight admission into the main draw. In the first round, he faced battle against fellow countryman Alexei Popyrin to begin his campaign. As the first set entered a tie-break, neither player managed to break the other’s service. In the tie-break, John Millman won seven straight points to win the set. Popyrin was able to win the second set and force a deciding with just one service break. With three straight victories to go up 3-0, Millman made a solid start to the third set. With Popyrin unable to overturn this disadvantage, the 33-year-old won 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-3.
Brandon Nakashima and John Milman will take on each other on Wednesday July 27 in the second round of the 2022 Atlanta open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 25 and conclude on July 31 this year.
