Former World No. 3 Dominic Thiem stumbled into the third round as his Round of 32 opponent Grigor Dimitrov withdrew from the match, a day after saving two match chances to avoid early elimination. In the opening set, when he dominated the Austrian, Dimitrov appeared to be in superb form. However, he appeared physically uneasy in the second set and eventually left the match when down 2-4. He has already advanced to the third round on his return to America for the first time since he won the U.S. Open in 2020, though it was not how Thiem would have preferred the match to end. The 17-time tour-level champion started his campaign on Monday by defeating fellow wild card J.J. Wolf in the first round with a score of 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, and 7-6 (8-6) victories. Thiem, who is currently 9-9 in 2022, will try to advance to a fourth straight quarterfinal on Wednesday.

Jack Draper, who reached the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open, got off to a strong start at the Winston-Salem Open. He managed to fight off Fabio Fognini’s comeback and move on to the third round of the competition. The 20-year-old British player, who received a first-round bye, lost serve in the match’s very first game but went on to break the Italian three times to win the opening set. Fognini rallied to tie the match in the second, but Draper seized control of the third set and defeated the seasoned Italian 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Overall, Draper saved 10 of the 13 break points he faced while converting 6 of 10 of them. The left-handed British pitcher’s season record now stands at 12-7 as a result of the victory. He has been in excellent form this year, making his ATP 1000 quarterfinal debut in Montreal, reaching the semifinals in Eastbourne, and taking home four Challenger trophies.
