In the 2023 ATP Dallas Open's second round on Friday, top seed Taylor Fritz will face fellow American Jack Sock.
While Fritz received a bye in the first round, Jack Sock did not. Sock, a former world No. 8, earned a wild card in this year’s tournament in Dallas. And he delivered on all counts. His first-round match featured practically everything in terms of intensity and nerve-wracking moments. In three hours and four minutes, Sock defeated Ilya Ivashka in a seesaw match, 7-6 4-6 6-4. Furthermore, it was his first ATP victory since shocking David Goffin in the Citi Open, which took place in the United States, last year. Sock came through when it mattered most. He stopped a staggering 15 of 18 break points, a performance that made guaranteed Ivashka would depart Dallas without any points. Sock acknowledged that he spent nearly three months getting in fitness and even decided not to compete in any tournaments held in Australia this season. It’s safe to say that on Monday night, his efforts paid off greatly.
Taylor Fritz, the top-ranked American, will participate after a gruelling five-set loss to Alexei Popyrin at the Australian Open this year. Given his consistency over the previous two seasons, Fritz was one of the high-profile seeded to lose before the second week. Popyrin had spent the previous year outside the Top 100, thus even before a ball was hit, the outcome was essentially predetermined. But Fritz delivered a highly uneven performance and unexpectedly shown more jitters than his underdog rival. Popyrin took advantage of it and was motivated by the hundreds of Australians who supported him along the way to surprise the tournament’s eighth seed. Given his good start to the season at the United Cup, the outcome was undoubtedly a letdown, but at the Dallas Open, he will have the chance to put it behind him. It’s a repeat of the Dallas matchup from the previous year, and truthfully, we can expect a similar outcome. Fritz is performing at a phenomenal level and is eager to put his Australian Open failure behind him.
