Tallon Griekspoor and Mikael Ymer will take on each other in the first round of the 2023 ATP Rotterdam Open on February 14.
The start of the new season couldn’t have been better for Tallon Griekspoor. By taking advantage of top seed Marin Cilic’s early exit, he won his first ATP title in Pune. He then advanced to the third round of the Australian Open by defeating his countryman Botic Van De Zandschulp. He then assisted the Netherlands in winning their Davis Cup match against Slovakia. Even though he had little prior experience on the main tour, the Dutch #2 made an impression in Rotterdam, and it will be interesting to see how he performs this time around given that he currently has a lot of form and momentum on his side.
In Rotterdam in 2018, the former world number 44 defeated Stan Wawrinka to record his first-ever victory in the main draw of an ATP event. In the subsequent edition, in 2019, he defeated Karen Khachanov to record his second such victory. He currently has a 3-2 record in this tournament’s opening round. However, the 26-year-old struggled in 2022 on indoor hard courts. After winning the first-round match in Rotterdam (against Aslan Karatsev), he lost seven consecutive matches indoors and finished the season with a w/l record of 2/9 on the surface.
Mikael Ymer had a strong start in 2023, winning 14 of his first 16 games while losing just five. Notably, eight of those victories took place on indoor hard courts, which helped him place second at the Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve Challenger and secure a spot in this week’s Rotterdam main draw. The gifted Swedish player has consistently performed well on indoor hard courts (91/46), and his best performance there last year was making the semifinals in Montpellier and Florence.
