Iga Swiatek, the current world number one, will face Australian Ajla Tomljanovic on Wednesday in the second round of the 2022 WTA Canadian Open.
The last time the number one player in the world Iga Swiatek competed on a hard court was back in the beginning of April when she won the Miami Open by thrashing Naomi Osaka in the final. The world number one had previously won the WTA Doha on the same court, giving her the Sunshine Double, which came after a triumph at a tournament in Indian Wells. She started a 37-match winning streak with the victory in Doha, which concluded in a triumph at the French Open, before losing in the third round at Wimbledon. Swiatek then participated in her home competition, where she won a few rounds at the Poland Open before losing to Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinals. Given how much of a favourite she already is for the 2018 US Open, her return to hard courts and the US Open Series is eagerly anticipated. Her performances at this point will significantly influence which way the bookmakers lean in the coming weeks.
Veronika Kudermetova, who was in fine form, was shocked by Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round of this competition after a battle that lasted two hours and 21 minutes, three sets, and three match points in the final set. When it counted most, Tomljanovic, who was broken a whopping six times during the match, struck back. She only had one break point in the first set, which she used to win it. In the third and final set, she took the lead three times. Although she was unable to hold on to her own serve, Tomljanovic won the tie-breaker to record her fifth first-round victory this season on hard courts. She hasn’t, however, ever won the second round on this surface in 2022, and she might continue to do so against Swiatek.
Iga Swiatek and Ajla Tomljanovic are scheduled to face one another in the round of 32 of the 2022 Canadian Open on Wednesday, August 10. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 8 till August 15.
The 2022 edition of the Canadian Open is set to begin from August 8 and go on until August 15. The men’s final is scheduled to be on August 15 and the women’s one is set to be held on August 14. There will be six rounds of play in the main draw excluding the qualifiers.
