After retiring in the second round of a match in Washington, D.C. due to heat exhaustion, the former world number one started her fifth career trip in Toronto without encountering a breakpoint during the 61-minute contest. In under one hour, Zhang Shuai defeated qualifier Cristina Bucsa, dropping just two service games en route to a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Only three times had she ever won the competition, matching her second-round finishes in Montreal in 2018 and Toronto in 2019. 20 times in the main draw this season, the Chinese player has failed to go past the second round. Her accomplishments include reaching a final in Birmingham and a quarterfinal in Nottingham on grass, as well as earning her first WTA title outside of China in Lyon.

The 2022 edition of the Canadian Open is set to begin from August 8 and go on until August 15. The men’s final is scheduled to be on August 15 and the women’s one is set to be held on August 14. There will be six rounds of play in the main draw excluding the qualifiers.
