The 2022 WTA Cincinnati Open's top seed Iga Swiatek of Poland will take against Sloane Stephens of the United States on Thursday.

Current world no 1, Iga Swiatek was unbeaten in 37 games earlier this year. Six consecutive victories had been hers, including the French Open and four WTA 1000 competitions. However, things have been a little difficult for the Pole ever since Alizé Cornet broke that record in the third round of Wimbledon. In the quarterfinals of the Poland Open, Caroline Garcia stunned her, while Beatriz Haddad Maia upset her in the second round of the Canadian Open. It will be intriguing to watch if she can recover from her recent downturn and get back to the form that allowed her to win titles in this year’s Roland Garros, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, and Qatar. This year, the 21-year-old also advanced to the semifinals of the Australian Open and Adelaide-1 competitions. Her 50th victory of the season would come in the second round. The 49-6 season record for the nine-time tour-level winner is good for now.

On Monday, Sloane Stephens defeated Alize Cornet in straight sets in exactly one hour. In the first set, the American, who is playing in Cincinnati for the eleventh time, jumped out to a 5-0 lead with three service breaks before Cornet recovered with a break. Stephens, however, broke once more to lead one set to love in the following game. In the second set, she continued to rule, defeating the World No. 37 and moving on to the next round. The World No. 57 at the age of 29 increased her season record to 12-12. Despite her inconsistent play, she will be glad to have ended a four-year title drought by taking home the crown in Guadalajara this year. She also competed in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros. She had a 1-4 record over the previous four competitions when she arrived in Cincinnati. She will be confident going into round 2 after dominating the first round and will be trying to get to the third round for the eighth time in Cincinnati.

Iga Swiatek and Sloane Stephens are scheduled to face one another in the second round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Thursday, August 18. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 14 till August 21.

The 2022 Cincinnati Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for both men’s and women’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 14 and conclude on August 21 this year.
