Against Wednesday, the 2022 WTA Cincinnati Open's second round will feature current Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina taking on former world number one Garbine Muguruza.
25 in the world In the Western & Southern Open, Elena Rybakina got off to a strong start after easily defeating Mayar Sherif 6-3, 6-2. Compared to her performance at the Canadian Open last week, where she lost to Cori Gauff in the second round, the Kazakh seemed much more assured. Elena lost 4-6, 7-6(8), 6-7(3) in a gruelling three-set battle that was hotly contested. She had a similar relationship with Marie Bouzkova in the opening round as well. However, that shouldn’t take away from the excitement of celebrating Rybakina’s outstanding year. With a second-place finish at the Adelaide International and a title run at the SW19, where she defeated competitors like Simona Halep, Bianca Andreescu, Petra Martic, and Ons Jabeur, she is now 30-14 overall.
The eighth seed, Garbine Muguruza received a bye into round two. The 28-year-old, who is now ranked No. 9 in the world, hasn’t had the finest start to the season so far; her current record is 9–13. She lost in the first round of her last few tournaments, which was out of character for her. Muguruza’s most recent match was at the Canadian Open, where she fell to Belinda Bencic in the third round. This has been the case for the majority of her season; her best performance was at the Qatar Open, where she reached the quarterfinals. Garbine, a top-10 player who won the Cincinnati Open in 2017, is unquestionably a force to be reckoned with. It hasn’t quite been the case this season, and given her shaky bracket, her odds of winning the tournament are minimal.
Garbine Muguruza and Elena Rybakina are scheduled to face one another in the second round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Wednesday, August 17. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 14 till August 21.
The 2022 Cincinnati Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for both men’s and women’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 14 and conclude on August 21 this year.
