Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka will face each other on Monday, November 7 in the semifinal of the 2022 WTA Finals.
Without dropping a set, Iga Swiatek completed her group stage matches. In addition to her prior convincing wins against Daria Kasatkina and Caroline Garcia, she destroyed Coco Gauff, 6-3, 6-0, to end the dead rubber formality. Over the course of six tennis sets, she has only dropped a total of 13 games. Since the year-end championships’ current round-robin format was reinstated in 2003, only Justine Henin (2007, 11) has lost fewer games while winning the group matches. She is also the first athlete since Justine Henin in 2007 to have 15 straight victories over opponents who are ranked in the top 10.
At the WTA Finals in Guadalajara, Aryna Sabalenka made up for her heartbreak from the previous year by just missing the semifinal. She went 2-1 in round robin matches after defeating Ons Jabeur in three sets and Jessica Pegula in two after suffering an unexpected first-round loss in the Guadalajara 1000. Given that she was only two points away from losing to Ons Jabeur on Monday and even stood one point away from losing the third set 5-2, her campaign could have turned much more hazardous. Nevertheless, she would be over the moon if she arrived in Texas in 2022 without ever having finished in the top 10 on a hard court.
Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka will face each other on Monday, November 7 in the group stage of the 2022 WTA Finals.
The eight players at the WTA Finals 2022 have been divided into two groups, these are the Tracy Austin Group and the Nancy Richey Group. Each player will play one match against everyone in their group and the top two from each will make it through to the semi-finals. The top finisher of one group will face the second finisher of the other. The winner of those two matches will then meet in the final to decide who will win the 2022 WTA Finals crown.
