Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula are scheduled to face one another in the quarter-final of the US Open 2022 on Wednesday, September 7.
Jule Niemeier is ranked 108th in the world and entered her fourth round match against top-seeded Iga Swiatek at a whopping but expected 9/2 odds. When she broke Swiatek in the first game of the match, it was most likely due to the world number one’s early nerves. Swiatek, on the other hand, found it difficult to break back and was eventually broken a second time to drop the set. And when Niemeier took another break early in the second set, Swiatek appeared to be in big trouble. The world number one found her serving rhythm in the third set, dropping only five points on serve and completing a victory over Niemeier.
Jessica Pegula was a slight underdog against Petra Kvitova in the fourth round, but the manner in which she dispatched her opponent would send a warning signal to her next opponent. The American defeated two-time Wimbledon champion Kivtova 6-3, 6-2 in 69 minutes to advance to her fourth Grand Slam quarterfinal. Despite facing 18 winners from Kvitova’s racquet, Pegula’s ability to keep the ball in play helped her win, as the Czech also made 24 unforced errors. Pegula may have to do a lot more than that against Swiatek, hitting more winners than the seven she managed throughout the match.
