Iga Swiatek, the top-ranked player in the world, will face Jule Niemeier, who is rated 108th, in the fourth round of the 2022 US Open on Monday.
Lauren Davis was Iga Swiatek‘s third victim in a row as she gradually regains the level of confidence that propelled her to the top of the leaderboard with the number of victories in a row this season. After defeating Sloane Stephens and Jasmine Paolini in straight sets, Swiatek defeated Davis 6-3, 6-4 in the third round. She spent about two hours in court. Since Davis took the first point to go 3-0 up and seemed like she may overturn the world number one at 4-1, the second set was a little closer. Instead, Swiatek dominated the match after that, winning five straight games while crucially only dropping four points overall.
Niemeier was the second favourite going into the match for the third time in a row, and for the third time in a row, she defeated her opponent in straight sets. The German, who has never been ranked higher than 94th in the world, defeated Qinwen Zheng 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the third round at Wimbledon this year to demonstrate her talent. This was true even though the odds were 9/4 against an upset occurring. Overall, it was a closely contested match, with Niemeier taking the lead in the first set thanks to a pivotal break in the seventh game. She had already turned away three break-points for herself. While Zheng did go 4-2 up in the second set, she again dropped her service, forcing the match into a tiebreaker. The second set started with an early exchange of breaks.
Iga Swiatek and Jule Niemeier are scheduled to face one another in a fourth round match of the US Open 2022 on Monday, September 5. The 2022 US Open is all set to begin from August 29 till September 11.
