Iga Swiatek defeated fellow Polish player and 82nd-ranked Magdalena Frech with ease in her first match since competing at Wimbledon, displaying no symptoms of rust. Swiatek exceeded expectations by winning her first match in a domestic competition in an hour and 12 minutes and securing a spot in the second round with scores of 6-1, 6-2. The top-ranked player in the world will now face a competitor who just won her first main draw match of the year. Swiatek cannot have it any simpler. Lee, who is rated 146th, and Swiatek have never faced off before.

Gabriela Lee Talaba had not won a WTA main draw match all season, and when she was knocked out in the second qualifying round of this competition, it appeared to be a repeat of what had happened all year. Nonetheless, Lee is sharpening her claws as she prepares to face world number one Swiatek after defeating fellow qualifier Raluca Serban in her opener. The 146th-ranked Romanian overcame a first-set deficit to go to the second round in two hours and 41 minutes. The final set was much closer, with Lee grabbing an early 2-0 lead.
