Petra Martic and Maja Chwalinska will face each other in the second round of the 2022 WTA Poland Open on Thursday, July 28.
Petra Martic, the Lausanne Open winner, started her Poland Open campaign with a straight sets triumph over Poland’s Weronika Falkowska. The victory extended the World No. 56’s undefeated streak to six matches and improved her season record to 24-13. But the eighth seed Croatian’s opening round victory over World No. 346 was far from simple. Martic then broke to take a 5-3 lead in the eighth game, but couldn’t serve out the match in the next game as the local favorite held the set on serve. But Martic broke Falkowska again in the next game to win 7-5, 6-4.
The two have never met previously. Maja Chwalinska’s strong season continued on Monday, as the 20-year-old lefty defeated Spain’s Rebeka Masarova in the first round. The Pole, who reached the second round of her major debut at Wimbledon this year, beat Masarova 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 45 minutes. Chwalinska’s season record now stands at 36-11 from all tournaments, with two ITF championships from three finals. She also made three ITF semifinal appearances this year. Martic will seek to continue her winning run with another strong performance on Thursday.
Petra Martic and Maja Chwalinska will face each other in the second round of the 2022 WTA Poland Open on Thursday, July 28. The WTA 250 competition is scheduled to start from July 25 and end on July 31 this year.
