Lorenzo Sonego and Gilles Simon are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 ATP Moselle Open September 22.
Lorenzo Sonego was the underdog in his opening match against Aslan Karatsev because he entered this competition with a rather unimpressive record of just one second round appearance in the previous six tennis tournaments. However, Sonego prevailed in the end, winning the close to two-hour long match 7-5, 6-3. Sonego took a 3-1 lead in the first set, but Karatsev broke back and let it slip away. However, Karatsev was soon broken as he attempted to hold serve to stay in the set at 5-6, and Sonego went on to win to love. However, Sonego quickly broke Karatsev to finish the fight.
Gilles Simon, who has dropped to 175th in the world, is nearing the end of his tennis career, and unsurprisingly, the 37-year-old was given 14/5 odds to beat David Goffin in his opener. That’s exactly what he did, as he defeated the Belgian 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the second round for the first time since June of this year. Simon was on court for an hour and 33 minutes, quickly finishing the first set and then overcoming a break down in the second to win. He’ll still have a difficult time, but against a player better known for his clay-court prowess, Simon has a chance.
