The semifinal matchup of the 2022 ATP Croatia Open between the Italian duo of Jannik Sinner and Franco Agamenone will take place on Saturday.
At his brief career, Jannik Sinner is taking the field in Umag for the second time. A 18-year-old thin boy who beat Pedro Sousa in the first round in three sets in 2019 drew the Croatians’ attention. The fans recognised a potential star even though he lost to Aljaz Bedene in the second round in 2019. Sinner returned to Umag two years later as the 10th-ranked player in the world. Due to his second-place seed, Sinner gets a bye in the opening round. He drew a challenging opponent in Jaume Munar in the second round, but because to a solid net game, he was able to win in straight sets. In a far tougher matchup against another in-form Spaniard, Roberto Carballes Baena, the Italian prevailed 6-4, 7-6 in straight sets (5). The 20-year-old, who is 33-9 overall this year, arrives in Umag after an amazing Wimbledon quarterfinal performance. He is aiming to reach his first ATP final of the year with a win over Franco Agamenone.
Franco Agamenone advanced through the qualifiers to reach his first ATP tour semifinal after winning five consecutive matches. The Italian will now move up in the rankings after already reaching a career-high rating of 136 thanks to this big breakthrough. Four of the Italian’s five victories have come against significant odds. He beat 2018 Umag winner Marco Cecchinato in the quarterfinal after defeating Norbert Gombos in the second qualifier, Laslo Djere in the first, Sebastian Baez in the second. In this semifinal matchup against his fellow countryman, Agamenone is playing the best tennis of his life and has nothing to lose. He may use Sinner by rattling him with his excellent serve return and net play.
Jannik Sinner and Franco Agamenone will take on each other on Saturday July 30 in the semifinal round of the 2022 Croatia open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 25 and conclude on July 31 this year.
