Elena Rybakina is unlikely to feel good about herself now that she is a member of the All England Club. Garbine Muguruza may have been defeated by her in a quarterfinal in Cincinnati, but she also lost in the first round to Clara Burel in New York and Daria Kasatkina in San Jose. Up until recently, the Kazakh was enjoying a disappointing season. She only had a few quarterfinal or higher finishes in the early part of the season, but after winning Wimbledon’s championship match against Simona Halep and Ons Jabeur, she stepped up her game (previously never been past a quarterfinal in majors).
After being out for nearly six months due to an injury, Laura Siegemund started the season in February. Since then, little has changed for her. In Stuttgart, she advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Tamara Zidansek and Maria Sakkari (by ret), although her other WTA matches ended in the first round or earlier. The former world number 27 returned to the top 200 rankings three months ago after taking home a pair of ITF clay-court victories in Austria. She just lost to fellow 30-something Sorana Cirstea in New York’s first round by scores of 6-4, 6-4, so her return to hard courts has been ineffective thus far.
