Denis Shapovalov has been playing some fantastic tennis at the tail end of the season, and the Canadian lefty has carried that form into Vienna, where he advanced to the semifinals with a straight sets win over Dan Evans on Friday. This is the world number 19’s third semi final appearance in the last four tournaments. He reached the finals in Seoul and the semifinals in Tokyo. Shapovalov, who defeated fourth seed Taylor Fritz in a three-set second round match on Friday, needed an hour and 39 minutes to defeat the Briton. He didn’t get broken in the match because he saved all four break points he faced and won 86% of the points on his first serve. During the match, the Canadian generated up to 16 breakpoints. Evans saved 13, but was broken three times as Shapovalov won 6-3, 6-3. Shapovalov, who also reached the final four in Dubai, will compete in the season’s fourth semifinal.
Borna Coric has made a habit of winning three-set matches, as the Croatian won his third straight three-set match in the tournament on Friday to advance to the semifinals. On Friday, the world no. 27 fought back to defeat fifth seed Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-5) in two hours and 54 minutes. Coric won the first set by taking advantage of his only break chance of the match. There were no more serve breaks in the match, and the next two sets were decided in tiebreaks. In fact, Hurkacz had a break point in the second set and three in the third, but the Croatian saved all four. Coric survived 28 aces and 58 winners from the world no. 11, as well as two fewer points than Hurkacz’s 107, but he won the crucial moments of the match to win.
Denis Shapovalov and Borna Coric are scheduled to take on one another in the semifinals of the 2022 Vienna Open on Saturday, October 29. The tournament is scheduled to be held from October 23 to October 30, 2022.
