Daniil Medvedev had to wait against Dominic Thiem in the second round of the Erste Bank Open on Thursday, but the top seed’s patience paid off as he won 6-3, 6-3 in Vienna. Both players came out firing in the first set of the indoor ATP 500 event. Thiem delighted the vocal home crowd with some clean hitting from the baseline off both wings, while Medvedev responded with his trademark defiant defence. The top seed’s combination of consistent, powerful hitting came to the fore after clinching the first break of the match for 4-3, however, as he accelerated away to a 98-minute victory. The Russian will face Jannik Sinner in the quarter-final of the competition.

Sinner defeated Francisco Cerundolo in the round of 16 of the competition after a convincing straight sets victory. The Italian scored two aces and returned four out of five break points to take a 7-5, 6-3 victory over the Argentine. Sinner had to withdraw from the Sofia Open earlier this month during a semi-final match against Holger Rune due to an injury concern and will be hoping for a statement comeback.
