The 2022 WTA Canadian Open's opening round will feature multiple Grand Slam champion Serena Williams taking against 59th-ranked Nuria Parrizas Diaz on Monday.

In the third round of the French Open last June, Serena Williams defeated Danielle Collins in straight sets to win the match, but since then, she has lost all of her competitive matches. After losing to Elena Rybakina in the fourth round of that tournament, Serena suffered an injury and withdrew from the match at 3-3 in the first round of Wimbledon. After that, she played no more singles matches for approximately a year. Serena returned to the circuit earlier this year in her favourite tournament on grass once more, but this round, Harmony Tan defeated the former world number one by scores of 7-5, 1-6, and 7-6 (7). It will be interesting to watch if Serena can overcome her lack of playing time and rustiness, as well as whether her injury won’t significantly lower the level of play.
Parrizas Diaz typically has a good record on hard court surfaces, but this year has been a little bit of an exception. She has suffered a decline in her fortunes overall as well as on those surfaces. Parrizas Diaz was eliminated by Cristina Bucsa in her second qualifying round over here in Canada, but she still advanced as a lucky loser. She did have two of her better performances on hard courts, reaching the third round at the Australian Open and the semifinals in Monterrey. She has also competed in 29 of her 38 ITF tournament finals and won one of her two WTA125 championships there.
Serena Williams and Nuria Parrizas Diaz are scheduled to face one another in the round of 64 of the 2022 Canadian Open on Monday, August 8. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 8 till August 15.
The 2022 edition of the Canadian Open is set to begin from August 8 and go on until August 15. The men’s final is scheduled to be on August 15 and the women’s one is set to be held on August 14. There will be six rounds of play in the main draw excluding the qualifiers.
