In the third round of the 2022 US Open on Saturday, world number 16 Diego Schwartzman will compete against 26-ranked Frances Tiafoe of the United States.
Diego Schwartzman ultimately prevailed in straight sets, but things could have gone other way. To advance to the third round, the Argentine needed to endure a tiresome second-round contest for three hours and 45 minutes. Against Alexei Popyrin, Schwartzman prevailed 7-6 (3), 7-5, and 7-6 (6) in a match that featured an incredible 35 break points. In the end, it was Schwartzman’s three service breaks to his opponent’s two that gave him the edge, along with his improved ability to maintain composure under pressure. Schwartzman will be aware that his chances are slim going into this match after struggling through his first-round match against Jack Sock and only advancing due to an injury to his opponent.
Tiafoe also won in straight sets in his second round encounter, somewhat different to how Schwartzman did, and in a similar fashion. Actually, the final score was the same: Frances Tiafoe prevailed 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (2) to advance to round three for the third consecutive season. Although he hadn’t been in great shape going into this tournament (6-4 win-loss at the US Open Series), Tiafoe will be a lot more confident than Schwartzman. Tiafoe had earlier in the opening round defeated Marcos Giron in three sets.
Diego Schwartzman and Frances Tiafoe are scheduled to face each other on Saturday, September 3 in the round of 16 of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
