On Sunday, the 2022 WTA Citi Open final will feature Russian Ludmilla Samsonova and World No. 37 Kaia Kanepi.
Due to her experience, Kaia Kanepi defeated the Australian Daria Saville in the semifinal and came very close to winning her first WTA championship since 2013. Saville was a little underdog going into the match, but Kanepi easily defeated him, winning 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the championship round. After defeating Greet Minnen in straight sets in the first round, Kanepi’s past two matches against Lin Zhu and Anna Kalinskaya each went to three sets. Given that Kanepi last participated in one in February 2021 in Melbourne, it will be intriguing to watch how he performs in the championship game. She had lost to Elise Mertens there, and now she is up against someone who, while being ranked a few spots lower, has already defeated her once.
Samsonova eliminated Xiyu Wang in her semifinal match here without wasting any time on the court, same to how Kanepi accomplished. The world number 60 Russian defeated Wang in one hour and four minutes, dropping just two games en route to the championship match. Samsonova only had to deal with one break point the entire match, which she managed to save while breaking her Chinese opponent five times throughout the course of the two sets. Following this, Samsonova surprised everyone by defeating Emma Raducanu in straight sets after also ousting Ajla Tomljanovic and Elise Mertens. Samsonova, though, didn’t have a particularly impressive record in matches played on hard courts this season. having only five victories in her previous 11 main draw games. Can she use this momentum to win her second WTA title of the season?
Liudmila Samsonova and Kaia Kanepi will face each other in the final round of the 2022 Citi Open on Sunday, August 7. The WTA 250 competition is scheduled to start from August 1 and end on August 7 this year.
