Mikael Ymer was a surprise semifinalist, but that was where the Swedish player’s luck ran out as Nick Kyrgios defeated him in straight sets to advance to his second consecutive final. As he defeated Ymer 7-6 (4), 6-3, Kyrgios, who had advanced to the title-decider at Wimbledon last month, blasted into another one this week. The game went on for one hour and 36 minutes. Despite hitting 10 aces during the match and not seeing a single break point, Kyrgios was able to maintain his composure despite having some difficulties handling the Ymer serve. For instance, in the first tiebreaker, there was a chance for either outcome at four points apiece, but Kyrgios easily won the following three points to take the lead. Can Kyrgios now finish what he started at Wimbledon and win his first championship since 2019? By the way, he had also won that one in Washington.

Nishioka will be aware that he played the finest tennis of his career this week come Sunday, regardless of the outcome of the final. To reach this point, the 96th-ranked Japanese player defeated five players who were all top-tier in their own right, including Andrey Rublev in the semifinals, the 1/5 favourite. In his one-hour, 21-minute demolition of Rublev, Nishioka was at his most methodical, defeating the Russian 6-3, 6-4. Nishioka will be aware that he might not stand much of a chance against Kyrgios, but because he is aware of the sometimes-present temperamental problems with his rivals, he will want to continue fighting as he has been all week.
