On Wednesday, fourth-ranked Maria Sakkari will play American Sloane Stephens in the second round of the 2022 WTA Canadian Open.
Similar to this Canadian competition, Maria Sakkari also had a first-round bye in Washington. Sakkari lost to Shelby Rogers in the second round of the USA Open Series in what ended up being her debut game. Sakkari only defeated the eventual runner-up in four games, but she would like to look back even further to get some confidence. The top-ranked Greek player, who hasn’t claimed a WTA championship since 2019, advanced to the Indian Wells Open final in early March after playing well and defeating players like Elena Rybakina and Paula Badosa. Sakkari has a 16-7 win-loss record on hard court surfaces this season, despite losing to Iga Swiatek in that match. Can she get a 17th place here?
Sloane Stephens needed six match points to beat fellow American Sofia Kenin in a close three-set battle, but she eventually won and advanced to the competition’s second round. The world number 50, who entered this match with a four-match losing record, won 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 to advance to Sakkari’s match. Stephens had an early 6-2, 5-1 lead in the match, only to see that lead vanish in a matter of minutes. This should have ended the match far sooner than the three hours it ultimately lasted. The competitors were back on equal footing after four match points and two serve breaks, and it required another rally by Stephens to win the third set. This time, she took a 5-2 lead in the final set before Kenin fought back to tie the match at 5-5.For Stephens’ benefit, she was able to maintain composure and serve before breaking her opponent one final time to win the match.
Maria Sakkari and Sloane Stephens are scheduled to face one another in the round of 32 of the 2022 Canadian Open on Wednesday, August 10. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 8 till August 15.
The 2022 edition of the Canadian Open is set to begin from August 8 and go on until August 15. The men’s final is scheduled to be on August 15 and the women’s one is set to be held on August 14. There will be six rounds of play in the main draw excluding the qualifiers.
