In a clash of ages, Naomi Osaka will take on Kaia Kanepi on Tuesday in the opening round of the 2022 WTA Canadian Open.
The oldest player in the top 100 at 37 years old, Kaia Kanepi, is coming off a fantastic start to the US Open campaign. She competed in the Citi Open last week and defeated Greet Minnen, Lin Zhu, Anna Kalinskaya, and Daria Gavrilova along the road to reach the final. She eventually lost to Liudmila Samsonova, but not before making her tenth WTA final. With these results, the seasoned Estonian improved her season to 24-12. She reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in January, a first for her in Melbourne, and then had appearances in the middle rounds of tournaments in Miami, Indian Wells, and Charleston. Kanepi, who is currently ranked No. 31 in the world, is having a fantastic season, which may be her final one before she retires. She would believe she has a strong chance of succeeding amidst this.
The former world number one and current #39 Naomi Osaka has had a poor season. The four-time Grand Slam champion is 13-6 in 2022, with her most recent defeat coming to Cori Coco Gauff in round two of the Silicon Valley Classic. Her previous competition was the French Open before that. She lost to Amanda Anisimova in the first round to cap off her dismal clay-court season (caused by a right ankle injury she sustained in Madrid). Osaka had her moments throughout the first half of the season, particularly at the Miami Open and Melbourne 250, when she advanced to the semifinal and final, respectively.
Naomi Osaka and Kaia Kanepi are scheduled to face one another in the round of 64 of the 2022 Canadian Open on Tuesday, August 9. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 8 till August 15.
The 2022 edition of the Canadian Open is set to begin from August 8 and go on until August 15. The men’s final is scheduled to be on August 15 and the women’s one is set to be held on August 14. There will be six rounds of play in the main draw excluding the qualifiers.
