Friday's third round of the 2022 WTA Canadian Open will feature Karolina Pliskova, the 14th-ranked player in the world, taking on world number four Maria Sakkari.
In two hours and ten minutes, Maria Sakkari eventually defeated Sloane Stephens to advance to the third round. After receiving a bye in the first round, Sakkari, who has never advanced past the third round in this tournament, triumphed 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. While she was broken twice during the match despite slamming nine aces, Sakkari responded with five breaks of her own to complete the victory. The top-ranked Greek player entered the competition coming off a loss to Shelby Rogers in the opening round of the San Jose Open, and there was always a concern that she might be rusty when the American hard court season got underway.
Pliskova faced off against Barbora Krejcikova in the opening round of the competition, but she wasn’t exactly the underdog. Instead, she defeated Amanda Anisimova by a score of 6/4. Anisimova has a strong recent record, and given her current form, it was no surprise that she was the tournament’s overwhelming favourite. especially when playing Pliskova, whose recent problems on tour have been well-documented. It turned out that Pliskova was in a rage. In the 54 minutes she spent on the court, she lost just two games and broke her opponent five times. Anisimova also had two break-points, but she was unable to capitalise on either. This is the first time in 2022 that Pliskova has accomplished this by winning back-to-back games. Can she now win three straight matches?
Paula Badosa and Karolina Pliskova are scheduled to face one another in the round of 16 of the 2022 Canadian Open on Friday, August 12. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 8 till August 15.
