The 2022 WTA Canadian Open's top seed, Polish's Iga Swiatek, will compete against Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia on Thursday.
The world’s top player, Iga Swiatek, destroyed Ajla Tomljanovic on Wednesday to earn her 49th victory of the year and move on to the Round of 16 at the Canadian Open. The Australian player resisted the Polish opponent in the second set, which she quickly won. In the opening four games of the second set, both players broke each other twice, but Swiatek quickly pulled away with the following four games to win 6-1, 6-2. The nine-time tour-level champion converted six of her nine break points, but she squandered both of her chances. She improved to 49-5 this season after winning 54 of the 81 total points played to defeat the World No. 72. The 21-year-old Swiatek has already won six titles this year in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Rome, and Roland-Garros. Swiatek has had an exceptional year overall.
Beatriz Haddad Maia has also had a successful year, winning her first two championships and rising significantly in the rankings to this week’s career high of 24. Haddad Maia defeated Leylah Fernandez, the 13th seed and local favourite, in just two sets on Wednesday. Haddad Maia had taken three sets to defeat Italian Martina Trevisan in the first round. Haddad Maia needed more than an hour to win the tiebreak’s first set. But after winning the first set, she easily defeated the Canadian, winning 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. This year, Haddad Maia has a 38-15 record overall. In addition to making it to her first doubles final at the Australian Open, she also won the tournaments in Nottingham and Birmingham, advanced to the quarterfinals in Eastbourne, and finished third in Monterrey.
Iga Swiatek and Beatriz Haddad Maia are scheduled to face one another in the round of 16 of the 2022 Canadian Open on Thursday, August 11. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 8 till August 15.
The 2022 edition of the Canadian Open is set to begin from August 8 and go on until August 15. The men’s final is scheduled to be on August 15 and the women’s one is set to be held on August 14. There will be six rounds of play in the main draw excluding the qualifiers.
