Maria Sakkari, who is still in contention for the WTA Finals, dispatched spirited American Danielle Collins 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday. The Greek had previously beaten Marta Kostyuk in straight sets after receiving a bye into round two. Sakkari will now look forward to competing in the prestigious year-end finals in Texas after a stellar season that saw her reach the top 10 rankings and peak at #3 before landing in sixth place. Maria has not won a singles title this season, but she has finished second in St. Petersburg, Indian Wells, and Parma. She also advanced to the semifinals in Dubai and the quarterfinals in Rome.
Veronika Kudermetova of Russia continued with business as usual, defeating Jelena Ostapenko in round three after first defeating Donna Vekic. She now has a record of 39-19 victories and is ranked No. 12 in the world, which is a career high. Following consecutive semi final appearances in Tokyo and Monastir, as well as a fourth-round showing at the US Open, Kudermetova arrived in Mexico. She has three runner-up trophies from Melbourne, Dubai, and Istanbul as far as her resume goes this year. She competed in doubles and won the Dubai Championships and Italian Open in addition to making finals in Miami, Den Bosch, and Miami.
