On Friday evening, Maria Sakkari defeated Veronika Kudermetova 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 to earn the final ticket to the WTA Finals. The victory was well-deserved for the Greek, who has been absolutely phenomenal this season (36-21). She made it into the top ten, peaking at number three before falling to sixth place. Maria has not won a singles title this season, but she has finished second in St. Petersburg, Indian Wells, and Parma. She also advanced to the semifinals in Dubai and the quarterfinals in Rome. Sakkari issued a warning shot this week in Guadalajara, defeating the tenacious American Danielle Collins 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. That victory came after a straight-set victory over Marta Kostyuk in round two.
Marie Bouzkova had an outstanding season on the 2022 WTA Tour. She rose to World No. 38, a career high for her, and her singles record now stands at 41-12. With one more victory, she will be able to compete in the most important match of her career. Her journey to the final four was impressive, as she beat Camila Osorio, Tereza Martincova, and Liumdila Samsonova. In the quarterfinals, she faced Russian Anna Kalinskaya, but the match ended in the first set when the Russian retired. Bouzkova’s season highlights include a title in Prague, a runner-up finish in Guadalajara (WTA 250 edition), and a quarterfinal appearance in Wimbledon.
