Elena Rybakina and Lesia Tsurenko will face each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 WTA Slovenia Open on September 16.
Elena Rybakina defeated Tereza Martincova in straight sets to advance to the tournament’s quarterfinals after surviving an exciting thriller against Laura Siegemund in the first round. The Wimbledon champion got off to a slow start in the first set, falling behind 0-4 before finding her rhythm and winning six straight games to win the first set. Rybakina continued to pressure the Czech player in the second set, breaking the World No. 66 twice en route to a 6-4, 6-1 victory. This year, Rybakina competed in the final of Adelaide and went on to win the Wimbledon championship by defeating Ons Jabeur.
Long-lasting battles are becoming a habit for Lesia Tsurenko. The Ukrainian needed two hours and 27 minutes to defeat Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round after defeating Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania in a match that lasted two hours and 58 minutes in the first. But in contrast to their first-round encounter, she only required two sets to defeat the Russian in round two. Tsurenko won the second-round match 7-5, 7-6 after recovering from deficits of 3-5 in both sets (7-5). In the opening round, Tsurenko had defeated Ruse 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. She has now advanced to the quarterfinals three times this year, but she has not yet advanced to the semifinals.
