Beatriz Haddad Maia and Ana Bogdan will face each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 WTA Slovenia Open on September 16.
The second seed Beatriz Haddad Maia advanced to the Slovenia Open quarterfinals by defeating Spain’s Cristina Bucşa in straight sets on Thursday. The World No. 18 dominated the first set, breaking the Spaniard twice to lead by one set. Bucșa broke first in the second to take a 2-4 lead. However, the left-handed Brazilian battled back to win the final four games and win the match 6-1, 6-4. Haddad Maia won 78% of his first serve points and saved 6 of his 7 breakpoints. She also had a number of break opportunities, but she only converted 4 of 13. In Slovenia, she also won her first round match in straight sets, defeating Clara Tauson 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
Ana Bogdan advanced to the tournament’s quarterfinals with her second straight three-set victory. The Romanian, ranked 65th in the world, had won the first round of the tournament 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 over eighth seed Ajla Tomljanovic. She defeated local favorite Tamara Zidansek in three rounds on Thursday. Bogdan easily won the first set, but lost a hard-fought second set tiebreak. In the third set, the Romanian raced to a 4-0 lead. Zidansek came back with a break, but Bogdan regained the two-break lead in the next game and then served out the match for a 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 victory. This year, she reached one WTA final, finishing runner-up in Warsaw.
