The 2022 Wimbledon has gotten off to an amazing start for Elena Rybakina. She won the first two rounds of the tournament against Coco Vandeweghe and Bianca Andreescu in straight sets. In the third round, she faced Chinese player Qinwen Zheng where she defeated her by 7-6, 7-5 without even dropping a set. This is already Rybakina’s third straight victory in straight sets in Wimbledon and is looking very dangerous as she will carry the momentum and will face Croatian player Petra Martic in the fourth round. She has already advanced to the fourth round of Wimbledon for the second year in a row.
Petra Martic of Croatia defeated the no. 8 seed Jessica Pegula of America by 6-2, 7-6 in straight sets to advance for the fourth round of the Wimbledon. Prior to winning, the Croatian player defeated no. 30 seed Shelby Rogers ( 6-2, 7-6 ) and Kristina Kucova ( 7-6, 6-3 ). Martic, ranked world no. 80, hasn’t lost a set at Wimbledon this year so far. Against the Pegula she won the first set 6-2 with a very flawless performance. She then has a 3-1 lead in the second before Pegula began to rally. Despite having a set point, Pegula was unable to force a third set, and Martic won the set in a tiebreaker to move to the fourth round. Martic has now qualified for Wimbledon’s fourth round for the third time in her career. In 2017 and 2019, she participated in the round of 16. Last time Martic and Rybakina met it was in Dubai where Rybakina won the match in straight sets.
Rybakina and Martic are scheduled to face each other on Monday, July 4 in the fourth round of the 2022 Championships. The timing of the match has not been decided yet. The Championships is scheduled to begin on June 27 and go on until July 10. There were a number of exciting matches on July 4 as the likes of Halep, Badosa, Anisimova and others will be in action.
