Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune are scheduled to face each other in the final round of the 2022 ATP Stockholm Open on October 23.
At such a young age, Holger Rune has mastered the art of recovering from defeat and achieving comeback victories. He demonstrated this talent against world No. 23 Alex de Minaur, a fighter himself. The kid overcame a set and break behind (4-6 1-3) and traded a several serve breaks in the decisive set to secure his place in the ATP Stockholm championship match, 4-6 7-6 7-5. During a tremendously successful 2021 season, the former Boys’ French Open champion won 14 matches (14-6) after dropping the first set. So far in 2022, he has won six such matches on the main tour, including victories against formidable opponents like Cameron Norrie, Jannik Sinner, and Alex de Minaur.
Despite losing his service at least once in each of the three matches this week, Stefanos Tsitsipas’ play has become better and better with each contest. Mikael Ymer, the top-ranked player in Sweden, tested him in the quarterfinal (7-5 6-3), and he defeated Emil Ruusuvuori in the semifinal (7-6 7-6), needing two tiebreakers (6-2 6-2). In two trips to Stockholm, the Greek No. 1 has never lost a match and has just once lost a set in seven encounters. In the title match here in 2018, he defeated former world No. 10 Ernests Gulbis to win his first ATP title.
