Cressy and Rune will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 Australian Open on January 19.
Holger Rune’s season goal is to perform well at major tournaments, and he is off to a super-impressive start at the first one of the year by thrashing Filip Krajinovic in the opening round of the Australian Open. He was in complete control of the game throughout and never trailed in any of the three sets, 6-2 6-3 6-4. The former winner of the Boys’ French Open surpassed his objectives for the year 2022, so it will be interesting to see if he can do the same for the year 2023. Last year, he rose over 80 spots in the ATP rankings to land in the top-10 and won three ATP titles, including a significant one at the Paris Masters where he defeated Novak Djokovic.
Maxime Cressy also had a very successful season in 2022, taking home his first ATP championship and rising up the rankings to land in the top 50. He won 11 out of 14 matches while he was there, which helped him finish second in Melbourne, advance to the quarterfinals in Sydney, and reach the round of 16 at the Australian Open. His performance and results in Australia served as the season’s starting point. The big-serving American struggled physically in the latter half of 2022 and hasn’t looked particularly sharp so far this year as a result of playing a lot of demanding matches at the highest level for the first time in his career.

Holger Rune has a 2-0 lead. If these two had met at the Australian Open the previous year, Maxime Cressy would have been seen as the slight favourite. The Dane is the rightful favourite here, though, given the kind of advancement he’s made on the main tour over the past six months.
