Andrey Rublev and Ilya Ivashka are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 ATP Gijon Open on Thursday, October 13.
Rublev, who reached the quarterfinals of the US Open, appeared to have maintained his form as he stormed into the Astana Open semifinals without breaking a sweat. He had played three matches prior to his semifinal match against Stefanos Tsitsipas, losing no more than four games in any of the six sets played. And that only once. He appeared to have started similarly to Tsitsipas, winning the first set 6-4, but the Greek number one came back to win it in three sets. Rublev, who has won three tournaments this season, including one indoors, will look to be his usual unmovable self against the 70th-ranked Ivashka.
Feliciano Lopez demonstrated in his final season as a tennis player that he still has the ability to take on players like Ivashka, but in the end, those aging legs gave way to the world number 70’s relative youth. Ilya Ivashka won a hard-fought three-set match in two hours and 21 minutes, overcoming a loss in a second set tie-breaker to win the match 6-4. In fact, Ivashka appeared to have messed up the final set as well, failing to serve it out at 5-3 but then getting himself a match-point on Lopez’s serve the next game, which he gladly took. Ivashka has also been in good form, reaching the fourth round of the US Open and the quarterfinals in Sofia.
