The eighth-ranked Andrey Rublev will play against the thirteenth-ranked Taylor Fritz on Thursday in the third round of the 2022 ATP Cincinnati Open.
As Andrey Rublev prepared to face Fabio Fognini in the second round after consecutive losses in Washington and Montreal, all eyes were on him. The Russian has appeared a little out of sync, and it showed in his triumph. Rublev was taking against Fognini, who preferred playing on clay and was out of form, and may have been anticipated to crush him. Instead, Rublev needed about two and a half hours on the court to defeat his Italian opponent in three sets. Rublev won the match 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), and 6-2, although it’s interesting to note that he only had to deal with three break points and was broken once. It happened quite early in the match, in the first set, and after he had broken back, the Russian had little chance of recovering in terms of serving. He did fumble a set-point in the opening set before gradually regaining the initiative in the second set and dominating the match in the final.
Given his current form, it wasn’t surprising that Nick Kyrgios opened as an 8/11 favourite in his second-round match against Taylor Fritz. The American, though, easily defeated Kyrgios in a 51-minute encounter. Fritz triumphed 6-3, 6-2, and later credited a number of recent events that all happened at once for his success. Both players were expected to have powerful serves and groundstrokes to neutralise each other’s threats, but in the end, Fritz served down 16 aces, didn’t encounter any break points, and broke Kyrgios three times. With that kind of form, Fritz would be feeling quite confident going into this match against Rublev, even if he had lost in the third round in both Washington and Montreal.
Andrey Rublev and Taylor Fritz are scheduled to face one another in the third round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Thursday, August 18. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 14 till August 21.
