In the opening round of the 2022 ATP Hamburg Open on Monday, wildcard participant Hans Rehberg takes on qualifier challenger Jozef Kovalik.
Hans Rehberg is only 18 years old, and his world rating of outside the top 800 shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. He has only competed in one ATP tournament in his career. Despite this, the German Tennis Association is pleased to award Rehberg the wildcards, this is his second for the season. Rehberg has demonstrated remarkable promise. Rehberg recently made it all the way to the quarterfinals of a Futures competition after falling in the finals of another. Both of these performances took place on clay, a surface on which he has been most successful at the entry level.
Jozef Kovalik is currently trying to just salvage the situation because his tennis career has never displayed the kind of brilliance that would cause many people to sit up and take attention. Kovalik will be attempting to move up from his performance on the Challenger circuit to the top level after dropping to 190th in the world from an all-time high of 80th. Kovalik’s concentration has been on clay and the Challenger circuit after he only participated in the main draw of two tournaments during the initial hard court swing early in the season, losing in the first round at both. Kovalik has advanced to the semifinals of a few of these competitions and the quarterfinals of two more.
Hans Rehberg and Jozef Kovalik will take on each other on Monday, July 18 in the first round of the 2022 ATP Hamburg European open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 18 and conclude on July 24 this year.
