Last week in Napoli, Lorenzo Musetti ran a successful campaign in front of the home crowd. His dominance over the former Italian No. 1 Matteo Berrettini in the championship match earned him a victory and a new career-high ranking of No. 23 in addition to the four matches he played there. The former Boys’ Australian Open champion won a bigger title in Hamburg’s 500 a few months ago, but the one he won in Napoli last Sunday was crucial for his development because that run would have given him the self-assurance and confidence to produce results on hard courts, the surface on which he did not look particularly confident or convincing until a few months ago.

In four matches across all levels, Albert Ramos Vinolas is winless, and it has been since his victory over Nicolas Jarry in the Paris Masters qualifying rounds of 2018 that he has triumphed on an indoor hard court. The seasoned Spaniard also dropped both of his previous matches in Basel, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the opening round of 2019 and Ruben Bemelmans in the 2015 tournament’s qualification rounds.
