In the opening round of the Canadian Open, world no. 14 Karolina Pliskova defeated fellow countrywoman Barbora Krejcikova and advanced. Pliskova defeated the World No. 19 6-3, 6-4 in under 1 hour, 39 minutes. Pliskova improved to 4-0 in their head-to-head meetings with the victory. The World No. 14 improved her season record to 11–12 by converting 5 of 6 break points and saving 6 of 9. Pliskova, who lost to Camila Giorgi in the 2021 final, missed the beginning of 2022 because of a hand injury. Since her return to the court in Indian Wells, she has mainly had difficulties. Her best performances this year were a quarterfinal showing in Berlin and a run to the semifinals in Strasbourg. The two-time Grand Slam finalist, who started her campaign with a great performance against a top-notch foe, will try to build on the momentum in the following round.
To beat Carol Zhao and advance to the second round of the Canadian Open on Tuesday, Amanda Anisimova required just 56 minutes. The 20-year-old American defeated the Canadian 6-1, 6-3 after saving 4 of 5 break points and converting 5 of 7. Anisimova increased her season record to 32-12 with the victory. The World No. 22 started the season by taking home the Melbourne Summer Set 2 crown after reaching the quarterfinals of the previous three competitions at Bad Homburg, Wimbledon, and San Jose. The two-time tour-level champion is competing in the Canadian Open for the second time. Anisimova advanced to the third round the previous year.
