Anna Bondar, 25, is now the single Hungarian remaining in the field, bearing the aspirations of a nation. She’s done well so far, and if anything, she’s increased her prospects of going the distance in Budapest. She defeated the number two seed and reigning French Open semifinalist Martina Trevisan 6-4, 6-1 on Friday. It was also one of her biggest victories of the season. Anna just reached the semifinals of the Contrexeville Challenger and the WTA Rabat. This will be the first time these two met on the WTA Tour.

Bernarda Pera of the United States will participate in what is expected to be her first WTA semifinal. Her previous best season result came at the Karlsruhe Challenger, when she finished second. She is now ranked World No. 130. Pera has only won one event in the five months since that one in May. She arrived in Budapest well prepared to compete as a qualifier. After defeating Katarina Zavatska and Sofia Shapatava in the preliminary round, Bernarda went on to defeat Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Marina Ribera, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the main draw. The 27-year-old left-handed lefty did it all without dropping a single set.
