As the defending winner in Budapest, Yulia Putintseva, seeded third, has done well to reach the last four. In the first round, she defeated Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-4, 6-1, and then defeated Laura Pigossi in three sets. She faced Lesia Tsurenko in the quarterfinals and benefited from the Ukrainian’s walkover; Tsurenko retired down 0-6 in the second set, claiming fitness issues. Putintseva is the current World No. 32, and her record this year is 20-12. She will try to add another championship to her total of five WTA finals and 12 ITF finals.

It is an advantage to Putintseva with 2-0; she last beat Krunic in the 2015 French Open in three sets. Aleksandra Krunic has excelled in the competition this week, and if she keeps up her current pace, she has every chance of winning the match. The majority of Krunic’s losses this year have come in the first several rounds. In fact, the 29-year-old had never advanced past round two in a competition until this point. She nonetheless succeeded in the doubles division by winning the Eastbourne International championship with Magda Linette.
