Jelena Ostapenko and Qinwen Zheng are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Tuesday, August 30.
World No. 16 Jelena Ostapenko hasn’t had the best start to the US Open season, arriving in New York after a string of disappointing results. She advanced to the second round in both Toronto and Cincinnati before falling to Alison Riske-Amritraj and Madison Keys, respectively. However, the 25-year-old Latvian did have a successful run on hard court earlier in the season, which should give her some confidence when she takes the court on Tuesday. To begin with, Ostapenko reached the final four in Doha after reaching the semifinals in St. Petersburg and Dubai. Jelena dispatched several notable players in these events, including Iga Swiatek, Sofia Kenin, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep, Amanda Anisimova, and Barbora Krejcikova.
Qinwen Zheng, a 19-year-old Chinese star, has had an outstanding season. She enters the US Open main draw with a career-high ranking of World No. 39 and a win-loss record of 30-14. She most recently reached the quarterfinals in Toronto, where she was defeated by Karolina Pliskova – but not before beating Rebecca Marino, Ons Jabeur, and Bianca Andreescu. Her other season highlights include titles in the Valencia Challenger and ITF Orlando, as well as a semifinal appearance in Melbourne Set 1. Zheng has also performed admirably in the majors. She advanced to the second round of the Australian Open, the fourth round of the French Open, and the third round of Wimbledon.
