Naomi Osaka, the former world number one, has had a slow year in 2022. Due to a slew of injuries, the 24-year-old was forced to miss several tournaments, making her participation on the tour sporadic. Osaka, who is now ranked World No. 44, had her only notable performance in Miami, where she finished runner-up. Naomi then only competed in the Madrid Open and the French Open before taking a break and returning to action in San Jose this month. Osaka was knocked out in round two after losing to Cori Gauff; she then withdrew in the first round against Kaia Kanepi in Toronto (due to a back injury), and then lost to Shuai Zhang in the opener in Cincinnati.
Danielle Collins, who is ranked 19th in the world, has had a rocky year thus far. While she beat Ana Konjuh, Clara Tauson, Elise Mertens, and Iga Swiatek on her way to the final at the Australian Open, she was unable to build on that victory in the following competitions. The 28-year-old only achieved a quarterfinal finish in Miami after that and lost early in the remaining competitions. Her participation has also been somewhat limited; she was defeated by Shelby Rogers in the second round of the French Open, Marie Bouzkova in the Wimbledon final, and Simona Waltert in the Lausanne Open.
