Victoria Azarenka and Ashlyn Krueger are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Tuesday, August 30.
No. 26 in the world Victoria Azarenka has a long history at Flushing Meadows, having finished third here three times, the most recent being in 2020. She is also one of the most experienced players in the field right now, at 33 years old. However, based on her recent losses, it is reasonable to believe that Krueger can upset the number 26 seed. Azarenka lost in the second round of the Cincinnati Open to British teenager Emma Raducanu and in the quarterfinals to 21-year-old Xiyu Wang. Vika has had to accept defeats at the hands of young players such as Linda Fruhvirtova, Iga Swiatek, and Amanda Anisimova this season.
Ashlyn Krueger, 18, of the United States, will compete in the US Open main draw for the second time in her career. She began as a qualifier and advanced past Renata Zarazua, Katie Boulter, and Lesley Kerkhove. As of Monday, the youngster was ranked World No. 244 and had a record of 26-15. This season, she has two ITF finals to her name: a runner-up finish in Sarasota and a title run in Evansville. Krueger’s WTA record remains understandably bleak, as she has yet to win a main-draw match this season. Azarenka is the overwhelming favorite, but given her recent struggles, Krueger will be optimistic about her chances of making a strong start at her home tournament.
Victoria Azarenka and Ashlyn Krueger are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Tuesday, August 30.
