On Tuesday, Naomi Osaka and Danielle Collins will square off in the opening round of the 2022 US Open in a match between two heavyweights.
For the former world number one Naomi Osaka, 2022 has been a slow year. The 24-year-old was forced to miss multiple events due to a variety of injuries, making her participation on the circuit intermittent. Osaka, who is currently ranked World No. 44, only had one notable performance, finishing in second place in Miami (losing to Iga Swiatek in the final). After that, Naomi only participated in the French Open and the Madrid Open before taking another break and returning to competition in San Jose this month. Osaka was eliminated early there after falling to Cori Gauff in round two; she then withdrew from her match against Kaia Kanepi in Toronto’s first round due to a back ailment; and finally, in Cincinnati, she was defeated by Shuai Zhang in the first round.
World No. 19 So far this year, Danielle Collins has had a very rough time. While she beat Ana Konjuh, Clara Tauson, Elise Mertens, and Iga Swiatek on her way to the final at the Australian Open, she was unable to build on that victory in the following competitions. The 28-year-old only achieved a quarterfinal finish in Miami after that and lost early in the remaining competitions. Her involvement has also been somewhat limited; she was defeated by Shelby Rogers in the second round of the French Open, Marie Bouzkova in the Wimbledon final, and Simona Waltert in the Lausanne Open.
Naomi Osaka and Danielle Collins are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Tuesday, August 30. The 2022 US Open is all set to begin from August 29 till September 11.
