Tuesday's first round of the 2022 US Open will pit the eighth-ranked Jessica Pegula against the 89th-ranked Viktorija Golubic.
In the run-up to the year’s fourth Grand Slam, she participated in three US Open Series tournaments this season, and Jessica Pegula would have been happy with her performance. Although she would have loved to advance to at least one of their finals in Washington, Toronto, or Cincinnati, Pegula performed as required throughout the tune-up competitions. Her three results for the year were a loss in the second round of the Cincinnati Open to Caroline Garcia, a semifinal loss to Simona Halep in Toronto, and a straight-sets loss to Daria Saville in Washington. Pegula appeared to have performed well in Miami, where she reached the semifinals, and at the Australian Open, where she advanced to the last eight, looking back at the first quarter as well. She would now like to get off to a strong start in a competition where she has never advanced past the third round.
Golubic put in a commendable effort to go through the US Open qualifiers, which he had to do to enter the main event. Viktorija Golubic won in straight sets to advance to the first round of these qualifications, with Kimberly Birrell’s effort in the second round forcing a third set. The 29-year-old has, regrettably, never advanced past this point at the US Open. Making matters worse, Golubic has never won a match at the Australian Open and has suffered mightily in Grand Slam tournaments, especially on hard courts, despite having reached the 35th spot once in her career. And it should come as no surprise that the Swiss player is a staggering 5/1 to win this matchup against a player who enjoys playing on this surface.
Jessica Pegula and Viktorija Golubic are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Tuesday, August 30. The 2022 US Open is all set to begin from August 29 till September 11.
